When live performances were cancelled in 2020, the Nutcracker ballet seemed destined to disappear for the season.

Instead, two dozen dancers from New York City Ballet traveled to upstate New York and created the first live Nutcracker performance in the United States that year. Led by choreographer Troy Schumacher, they transformed the historic Wethersfield Estate into a temporary home and performance space, building a new interpretation of the Nutcracker against all odds.

The Nutcracker at Wethersfield is a new holiday documentary from executive producer Amanda Seyfried that explores how this unique Nutcracker production came to life. Filmed on location in the Hudson Valley, the documentary blends ballet, behind-the-scenes storytelling, and the history of the Wethersfield Estate to reveal how artists worked together during the pandemic to create hope and connection.

Featuring dancers from New York City Ballet and new choreography by Troy Schumacher, the film offers an intimate look at the creative process, the resilience of the arts, and the making of a Nutcracker that has become a modern holiday tradition.

Featuring ballet stars Sara Mearns, Mira Nadon, Emma von Enck, Taylor Stanley, Tyler Angle, and Ashley Laracey—along with creative director Elizabeth Mayhew, costumer Marc Happel, and the ballet’s creator, Troy Schumacher.
