SLIP OFF THE STREET AND INTO AN INFINITE LIGHTSCAPE, WHERE SILHOUETTED FORMS GLIDE THROUGH TIME AND SPACE.
Translation, BalletCollective's acclaimed contemporary ballet inside a light installation, choreographed by Troy Schumacher, returns for an extended run inside The Culture Club at 530 West 27th Street, New York City's most storied venue for immersive theatre.
Six dancers move in silhouette through shifting planes of projected light, surrounded by music from Julianna Barwick and an immersive installation by Sergio Mora-Diaz. Created in collaboration with Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award–winning author Ken Liu, Translation invites audiences into a space suspended between memory, message, and dream.
Translation is a seated event that ends approximately one hour after it’s published start time.
Join us on the precipice of an unknown world, and embark on a journey.

INTIMATE. MEDITATIVE.
UNLIKE ANY OTHER DANCE EXPERIENCE.
Called “breathtaking," “magical" and "an infinite landscape of moving light and shadow," Translation has not been seen in NYC since its 2017 premiere. By popular demand, this run marks BalletCollective’s longest season to date, with more performances and opportunities to experience the work than ever before.
SOUND SURROUNDS YOU. THE WORLD OPENS. EVERYTHING SLOWS.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Translation is contemporary ballet performed in close quarters. "Immersive" here means proximity — the dancers are immersed inside the installation — not participation. You'll be seated for the full 55 minutes.
The space. The Culture Club holds 82 seats. The performance happens at close proximity.
When to arrive. Doors open 30 minutes before each performance. We recommend arriving 15 to 20 minutes early.
Late seating. The performance runs continuously, with no intermission. Late arrivals will be seated at the next natural pause, or at the end if no break allows.
Dress. Whatever you'd wear to dinner. Casual is welcome.
Photos and video. Photos before and after the performance are encouraged. During the performance, please put phones away. Following the performance, there will be a photo opportunity inside the installation.
Children. Recommended for ages 9 and up. The work is contemplative and runs continuously.
Accessibility. Translation contains sustained projected light, including patterns, flicker, and shifting visual fields and may impact patrons with photosensitive epilepsy or sensitivity to light-based stimuli.
See Getting Here for venue details, or email info@balletcollective.com with specific needs.
Program and offerings subject to change. Tickets are nonrefundable and can only be exchanged at BalletCollective’s discretion. Final ticket price will include applicable fees.
GETTING HERE
Translation takes place at The Culture Club, 530 West 27th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues in West Chelsea.
By subway. The closest stops are the C and E at 23rd Street and the 7 at 34th Street–Hudson Yards. Both are about a 10 minute walk. The 1 at 28th Street works too, with a slightly longer walk across town.

By ride-share or taxi. The block in front of the venue is fine for drop-off. Use "530 West 27th Street."
Accessibility. The entrance to The Culture Club is via stairs. A stair-free entrance is available with coordination. Email info@balletcollective.com at least 24 hours before your performance to arrange stair-free entry. Wheelchair and companion seats are available for purchase.
